A Look At Our History
In 1985 two forward-thinking women from Michigan mixed up the first batch of Sojos in their own
kitchen. Our first product, Sojos Original, was based on the teachings of Juliette de Bairacli Levy, considered
the grandmother of herbal medicine. This first-of-its-kind Pre-Mix was soon followed by tasty gourmet treats.
In 1996, Ward Johnson was working as the manager of The Uptown Veterinarian, a holistic practice located in
Minneapolis, MN and was floored by the positive results he saw with dogs that were fed Sojos. When he learned
that the company was for sale, he jumped at the chance to take the baton and continue spreading the word
about fresh, raw food for pets.
Sojos was founded on the belief that raw nutrition could make a visible and profound difference in a pet's health.
But in 1996, we were clearly ahead of the times. Back then, consumers put much less emphasis on the contents of
their own food, let alone their pets. As a result, there were only a handful of pet companies advocating raw nutrition
and freeze-dried raw food was virtually unheard of.
Our goal has always been to change the way that people feed their pets. And after 20 years of hard work, it's
gratifying to now see more and more people discovering the benefits of a raw diet. From healthier skin, coat,
teeth and gums, to a stronger immune system, to a reduction in allergies, it’s adding up to longer, healthier
lives. And we're proud to be part of that. In the years that followed, Sojos introduced a Grain-Free Pre-Mix
recipe, Complete recipes, with freeze-dried meat included in the bag, and freeze-dried meat treats.
In 2016, Sojos joined forces with WellPet, a family-owned company like ours, and a partner who shares Sojos’
mission and will provide new resources that will help Sojos continue to grow and serve more pets. We have always
admired their organization and brands, which, as you may know, include Wellness, Eagle Pack, Holistic Select,
Old Mother Hubbard and Whimzees. Our most recent products include freeze-dried cat treats and the first
life-stage food in the raw, shelf-stable food category—Sojos Complete for Puppies.
